WordCamp Europe took place in Basel from June 5 to 7, 2025. June 5 was Contributor Day, followed by the main conference on June 6 and 7. This edition was special for me in several ways, because I was not only there as a photographer, but had also been involved in the photo team organisationally in the lead up to the event.
An important part of that was a workflow I developed based on Photo Mechanic. The goal was to make sure that every session could be labelled correctly while also ensuring that each photographer received the proper credit. Together with around 20 other photographers, images were shot, selected, and uploaded throughout the day. The deliberate decision was made to shoot directly in JPEG so that publishing could happen as quickly as possible.
This workflow made a big difference. The galleries were published on Flickr on the very same day, and for the first time the complete photo archive was already online before the event had even ended. That also showed how important fast delivery is. When images are available quickly, they get viewed, shared, and actually used.
By June 30, the images from WordCamp Europe 2025 had reached almost 1.55 million views. That accounted for around 16 percent of all views across the entire Flickr account. The images were published under a Creative Commons licence. What was especially rewarding was that this year, for the first time, giving proper credit when the images were used actually worked consistently, which had by no means always been the case in previous years.
