On 1 January 2024, my photographer colleague Philippe Düsel and I met up for a photo walk early in the morning for the first time. While many people were probably still lying in bed with a hangover after New Year’s Eve, we were already out on the streets. For this special start to the new year, we chose Basel as our setting.
Our walk began at Messe Basel. From there, we walked down the street towards Mittlere Brücke. The city was quiet, almost unusually still, and that was exactly what made those first hours of the year so appealing.
From Mittlere Brücke, we continued along the Rhine. Step by step, Basel revealed a side of itself that you rarely get to see in everyday life. No rush, hardly any people, just soft light, empty streets, and a very special atmosphere that was perfect for photography.
Our route then took us all the way to the Novartis Pavillon before we made our way back towards the old town.
