The Pilatus Railway climbing through the steep mountain landscape
Up Mount Pilatus on the world’s steepest cogwheel railway
Since 1889, Mount Pilatus has been home to the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, climbing gradients of up to 48 percent.
There are many ways up Mount Pilatus. Anyone not wanting to hike can take the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad. The panoramic gondola from Kriens is said to be just as scenic.

Once at the top, a short walk is enough to gain a little more height and enjoy the view across Lake Lucerne.
