Luckily, the car was still on winter tyres. Even so, the road conditions became quite challenging shortly before the car shuttle through Furka and Oberalp. Somehow, though, everything fell into place and the trip continued safely to Täsch. From there, the final stretch to Zermatt was by train, as the village is largely car free.

At the station, Airbnb host Mary was already waiting and kindly gave me a lift to the accommodation. The view of the Matterhorn from there made the snowy arrival feel even more special.

Because of the heavy snowfall, hiking plans had to be set aside. But sometimes travel works out differently and even better than expected. Instead of heading out on the trails, it was time to take the Gornergrat Railway up into the mountains.

The ticket was not exactly cheap, costing between CHF 76 and CHF 114 in 2018. But the moment the train climbs higher and the mountain views begin to open up, it already feels worth it. And once at the top, the panorama is simply unforgettable, with stunning views of several of Switzerland’s iconic 4000 metre peaks.
